Moving Glossary

The process of shifting from one place to another is difficult and time consuming. Listed below are a few terms and definitions, a moving glossary in other words that you need to be familiar with before you engage the service of a professional mover.

Extra charge/accessorial charge: These charges are in addition to normal charges. They are for the purpose of packing and unpacking. These charges are also levied if there are extra items to be moved, which were not specified at the time of drawing of the contract.

Advanced charge: This is the cost of engaging a professional other than the movers. Usually, the movers engage a professional. The professional bills the mover who in turn bills the customer.

Agent: According to the moving glossary, an agent is one who is the local representative of the national movers. There are various agents, namely destination agent, hauling agent and booking agent.

Appliance service: This is the cost incurred for disconnecting electric equipment at source and reconnecting them at destination. Appliances like television, computer and refrigerator are covered under this.

Auxiliary service: If there are delays at the destination caused by unforeseen circumstances like blocked drive way, then extra cost is billed to the client.

Bill of lading: It is the contract drawn between the client and the mover pertaining to moving of articles from one place to another. This contract is binding and therefore requires close scrutiny.

Binding estimate: It is the estimate that is given by the mover after an on-site estimate.

Non-binding estimate: Moving glossary says, this is the estimate provided by the mover based on professional experience. This estimate is not fixed and final amount that is billed can vary.

Carrier: It is the company that has been hired to perform the duty of professional movers

Carrier liability: The liability for each and every operation is estimated by the movers. This is termed as carrier liability.

Cost of move: The total cost incurred by the client, including all additional charges is termed as cost of move.

Customs clearance: Articles need to be cleared by the customs officials of the destination country, if the move is international.

Declared value: It is the value that is assigned to articles. Insurance is based on the declared value

Elevators carry: According to moving glossary, this is the charge levied by the mover, if transportation of goods involves an elevator either at the source or at the destination.

Flight charge: If the articles have to be carried on steps either at the source or destination, then extra charges are levied.

Freight service: If the services of the mover involves pick up at source and drop at destination, it is termed as freight service.

Interstate move: If the move involves crossing of at least one state boundary, long haul tax is applicable.

Linehaul charges: If the move is long distance, these charges are applied based on the distance and weight of the articles.

Moving kit: It is a kit containing all the items that are required for packing and un-packing.

Transit insurance: It is the Insurance cover provided for articles in transit.
